8 4 2012 Update Coming Down the Pipe

Greetings all. My Spirits are soaring and my Energy is good.

What next? Is there a next? Does there have to be a next? Do you have to keep repeating the word "next" so many times?  OK, we dont have to be rude! HA!!!

What "next" indeed! If I did not know better I would think "Cyber Mom" is poking fun at me. I know it cant be those "voices" again. Or is it?

Back to business or should I say fun. OK then, what is next for the future? Yes, I said future. With me you never know. One minute I ready to "Sign Off" for good, the next I am creating a new blog knee deep in an experiment. Go figure.

Right, anyway I am really working hard in my oh so little spare time on a new... new... oh, I dont know what to call it. I guess an idea or ..... again I dont know what to call it. It wont be anything fast, but it wont be forever. It will take a lot of work and at present time is not what I have a lot of unfortunately.

That being said this is sometime that I feel I need. Something that will help me put things in prospective. It will be something that will help me achieve good if not great health. I hope. Most of all I dont mind sharing it with you my Friends and Family. It is just who I am. How much will it cost you?

Hmm...... let me see. How much is it worth? A lot to some, nothing to others I guess. OK, the price: PATIENCE.

Hey the support I get from those who are willing to share are payment enough. Not everyone shares on the blog though. Many share through email. I really wish they would share "anonymously" online so all can benefit from their input. Even if it is just a question. You will be surprised how that helps others. And "others" is one of the big reason I continue this blog or blogs or whatever. Hey I am not trying to pressure anyone to go public. HA! Continue to do what makes you feel comfortable. The choice is always yours.

Again, I am working on something that will put together what I have been working on for the last two years and to a degree things I have been working on my whole adult life. Will it be all diet? No. Diet is oh so important, but life has a balance.

Yes, my Friends and Family a Balance Indeed! What is my version of balance you may wonder? Well I kinda lead on to it in some of my responses in my comments to my dear Friends and Family that took time out to respond to my latest posts.

Riddle me this: Diet, Food, Exercise, and Spirituality.

Did I leave something out? Probably. I do feel that I did, but at the moment I cant think of it.

Have a Healthy Day my Friends and Family. No Surrender, No Retreat and Battle On!!!

I See the Light

Cheers,

Dave

Electro Cut Your Body Fat Study Shows 5 6 cm and 4 9 Reduction in Waist Body Fat in Young Women in 6 Weeks

No sweat, just some wires? Study shows: It does not take much effort to lose belly fat.
Liposuction is an invasive procedure that is not without risk. Against that background its no wonder that people are marketing alternative methods like high-frequency current therapy as allegedly safe go-to methods to rid yourself of unwanted body fat. The question is: Do these currents actually help you to lose body fat? That is: Can electrocuting your belly "electro-cut" significant amounts of body fat? Practitioners who use this technology will say "yes". From a scientific standpoint, though, the question is difficult to answer, because the use of high-frequency current therapy has been given little attention in the scientific community.

As Kim et al. point out in a recent paper in the J. Phys. Ther. Sci., some previous studies have failed to provide evidence for the effectiveness of high-frequency current therapy in women with obesity, whereas more recent studies have indicated that a high-frequency current therapy decreases female abdominal obesity (Kang. 2005; Han. 2010). Accordingly, their latest study aimed to determine whether high-frequency current therapy can be effectively used to reduce female abdominal obesity.
Some people claim coffee applied to the skin will also burn fat, but... well, you better drink it

To this ends, the researchers recruited twenty-two female volunteers who were randomly allocated to either the experimental group (EG) (n = 12; age, 21.17 ± 0.72 years; weight, 63.17 ± 7.91 kg; height, 159.63 ± 4.56 cm) or the control group (CG) (n = 10; age, 21.10 ± 0.74 years; weight, 68.79 ± 11.73 kg; height, 161.69 ± 5.25 cm). Inclusion criteria were as follows:
  • a body mass index (BMI) of ≥23 kg/m2 and a waist-hip circumference ratio of  ≥ 0.8013
  • no past or present neurological, musculoskeletal, or cardiopulmonary disorders that would have affected health condition;
  • no smoking and drinking habits; and
  • no psychological problems.
Futhermore, pregnant women were excluded as well. The subjects of both groups were asked to keep a regular dietary habit during the experimental process. A nutritionist drew up a diet plan of 2,000 to 2,500 kcal/day across 3 meals (8 a.m., 1 p.m., and 6 p.m.) for the 6-week intervention. In addition, subjects were asked to avoid extra activities and exercises beyond daily routine activities.
Figure 1. Changes in BMI, waist circumference, subcutaneous body fat and total body fat (%) after 18 sessions of high-frequency current therapy in Korean women (Kim. 2015).
Only the subjects in the EG group were subjected to high-frequency current therapy, with a frequency of 0.5 Mhz. The treatments were performed exclusively on the abdominal region while subjects were supine using specific equipment (CWM-9200; Chungwoo Medical, Seoul, South Korea) for 60 minutes, 3 times per week, for 6 weeks (a total of 18 sessions).
"High-frequency current therapy was performed in 2 phases: 2 sets of 15-minute applications of capacitive electric transfer (CET) and resistive electric transfer (RET) with the pulsed current option (current conduction time, 0.7 seconds; rest interval, 0.3 seconds) for the fist 3 weeks, followed by a 30-minute application of the CET and RET modes with continuous current conduction in the final 3 weeks. The intensity was individualized within a range of 6–7 mA to comfortably adjust the heating sensation during the intervention. An insulated electrode and a stainless steel electrode (8 cm in diameter) were used for the CET and RET modes, respectively. Conductive gel (Body Rubbing Cream; SA’COS, Incheon, South Korea) was used to facilitate skin moisture and current conduction, and high frequency current therapy was delivered by making circular motions of the electrode over the abdominal region at a moving speed of 5 cm/s, avoiding focused pressure on therapeutic areas" (Kim. 2015)
The comparison of the pre- vs. post-data showed here significant main effects of time with respect to waist circumference, abdominal obesity, subcutaneous fat mass, and body fat percentage, which differed significantly between the groups (see Figure 1), "suggesting the effects of high-frequency current therapy in decreasing obesity" (Kim. 2015).
Bottom line: I must say that I am impressed. I havent been there to control whether the scientists cheated, but considering the fact that the control group received the same controlled diet as the women in the experimental group, the loss of body fat and the reduction in waist circumference that was achieved within only 6 weeks in young women is impressive.

High frequency currents are also been used for cellulite treatment, but there are other options, as well | learn more
In the end, the mechanism of action is simple and is believed to rely mostly on the heat induced dilatation of subcutaneous vessels and the subsequent facilitation of the lipolytic process (Song. 2006). Which would also explain why the effect was highly localized and there were no significant inter-group difference with respect to the BMI of the women in the study at hand. A study that is yet limited by the low number of participants, a lack of safety data (no blood analyses, for example), the absence of measurements of the reductions in visceral fat and the lack of a rigid dietary and activity control as it would be possible in a metabolic chamber | Comment on Facebook!

4 Question relate lose weight

Dimitri Vervitsiotis/Getty Images

Recently a family friend said to me, "Weight loss is so confusing, I just feel like giving up!" Unfortunately I hear that a lot, and I totally get it. The truth is, while some of what you hear is based on new research, many weight loss trends are just that–trends designed to generate buzz, sell products, and keep consumers "tuned in."

In my opinion, the best way to navigate the ever-changing weight loss landscape is to find an expert you trust, to help you sort out fact from fiction and hype from help. Thats exactly what this post is all about. Heres the real deal about four of the most confusing weight loss concepts Im asked about often, and my bottom line advice.

Water weight

You may have heard that when you lose weight quickly, its mostly water weight. Thats true, and heres why: when you step on a scale, it measures not just body fat and muscle, but also bone, organs (like your lungs, heart and liver), bodily fluids, waste inside your digestive system you havent yet eliminated, and glycogen (the form of carbohydrate you sock away as a back up fuel, which is stored with water).

The last three (fluid, waste, and glycogen) always fluctuate, but can shift quickly and drastically when you change your diet. For example, going on a low carb diet, or cutting your carbs way back, triggers the loss of glycogen and the water stored with it, and if extreme, can also be dehydrating. Just two cups (16 oz) of water weigh one pound, so shedding fluid fast can result in weighing a lot less on the scale.

Changes in actual body fat on the other hand dont happen so quickly. Scientists have always estimated that in order to lose one pound of fat, you have to create a 3,500 calorie deficit. So to shed just one pound of body fat in a week, you need to burn off 500 more calories than you take in every day for seven days, or cut your intake by 250 and burn off an additional 250. Trouble is, your body is much more complicated than simple math, so the formula doesnt always hold true.

Ive had many clients actually hit weight loss plateaus because they ate too little, exercised too much, and as a result, brought their metabolisms to a screeching halt. That said, even if the formula was spot on, youd have to spend over seven hours on the elliptical to drop one pound of fat–a much tougher task than what it takes to shed 16 ounces of H2O.

Bottom Line

Dont get too caught up in numbers. While quick loss can boost confidence and stick-with-it-ness, dont rely on the scale as your only measure of success. Go by how you feel, and how your body looks – regardless of the numbers–and focus on a long-term strategy that allows you to safely and sanely lose fat. And keep in mind that a body thats leaner (less body fat), more toned, well-nourished and hydrated will weigh more than one thats thinner but flabby, undernourished, and dehydrated.

Brown vs. white fat

There have been a handful of news items recently about how brown fat may help fight obesity. And while the research is certainly intriguing, there are still many unanswered questions. What we do know is there are two types of fat in our bodies: white and brown.

Brown fat has a richer blood supply and is packed with more mitochondria, the tiny furnaces inside cells that burn calories. When were born, we have more brown fat to keep us warm. Scientists always thought it diminished with age, but through high tech imaging, researchers recently discovered that adults still have brown fat, some more than others, and carrying just three ounces can burn several hundred extra calories a day.

This variation may explain why some people stay slimmer, seemingly without trying. Trouble is, there is no way to find out how much you have, and scientists are still experimenting in mice to determine how white fat gets converted to brown.

Bottom Line

Ill definitely be keeping my eye on this, but right now, there are no published studies about how to boost your bodys brown fat. If there were well-established, research-based diet and/or exercise strategies for upping this stuff, believe me, Id be all over it. Until then, just stay tuned.

Negative calorie foods

Ive been hearing about so-called negative calorie foods since before I went to college to study nutrition science. In a nutshell, a negative calorie food is a food that triggers your body to burn more calories than it contains.

As a teen, I had always heard this about celery and lettuce, the theory being that you burn more calories chewing these veggies than they provide. Other foods get pegged as negative calorie because they rev up metabolism, like hot peppers or green tea.

The truth is, there is some truth to this, but munching on celery and loading up on jalapenos wont lead to drastic weight loss, and most of these foods dont quite tip calorie balance into the red.

Bottom Line

I love discovering new research about foods that boost weight loss results or rev up metabolism, and I think well continue to learn more about why not all calories are created equal. But negative calories foods as a sole weight loss strategy just doesnt pan out.

Set point

This old school theory has been interpreted in various ways. Some say set point essentially means that your body has a certain comfortable weight, determined by genetics, and will therefore "fight" to maintain that weight, perhaps by releasing hunger hormones to resist weight loss, or anti-hunger hormones to prevent weight gain.

A great deal of research, including studies on twins raised apart, indicates that there is a strong genetic component to weight. However recent research concludes that the set point theory is at odds with the obesity epidemic – the sharp rise in body weights in both children and adults in many countries since the 1980s. In addition, dozens of studies support that what and how much we eat are largely influenced by our environments (e.g. if a candy dish is on your desk, youll eat more than if its tucked away in a drawer).

Bottom Line

Weight regulation is incredibly complex. We now know that its influenced by sleep, stress, hormones, even chemicals in food and the environment, but dont give up! In all my years in private practice Ive seen people achieve incredible results, and even reach their lowest adult weights after having children, and well past 40 or 50. That said, its important to be realistic about your body.

Sometimes a client will bring me a photo of a celebrity and say, "I want to look like this," and aside from completely different genes, the celeb will have an entirely different body type. So while we cant all look like Gisele, genetic predispositions are no reason to abandon healthy eating and an active lifestyle.

6 4 2012 The 5 Bite Diet Day 21

Greetings all. My Spirits are climbing. Energy levels are good.

Whats all this talk about carbs? Have you not learned your lesson? Havent you? No, I have not. I am desperately trying to find what carbs trigger uncontrollable eating and what do not. I actually can see the difference. This is always my opinion about ME. What works for you is what works for you. Yall should know by now that I like to experiment. I just do. I cant help myself. Was I an explorer in another life? HA!!!

Zero Carb for me will be a way of life for the most part, that I do know. Combined with Portion Control via The 5 Bite Diet and I could be well ............ INVINCIBLE!!!

That being said, I do feel that certain carbs that I have eating are OK with me in small quantities. I have been tracking on the side what carbs have been Naughty and Nice. Yes, I am making an "Avoid List for Life". There are very few at this time and I dont expect the list to grow much. Ya never know. I do love eating meat. I rather enjoy it a lot. So for the most part (a real BIG part) Zero Carb is for me, but not exclusively.

Results thus far:

(Please let me know if I mess up on my math below, I might add or subtract incorrectly)

Day 01 = (0.0) = 00.0 lbs loss current weight: 190.0 lbs (just starting)
Day 02 = (2.0) = 02.0 lbs loss current weight: 188.0 lbs (nice)
Day 03 = (1.6) = 03.6 lbs loss current weight: 186.4 lbs (this is how we do it)
Day 04 = (1.8) = 05.4 lbs loss current weight: 184.6 lbs (lovely)
Day 05 = (1.2) = 06.6 lbs loss current weight: 183.4 lbs (interesting)
Day 06 = (1.8) = 08.4 lbs loss current weight: 181.6 lbs (oh, yeah)
Day 07 = (1.2) = 09.6 lbs loss current weight: 180.4 lbs (keep it coming)
Day 08 = (0.4) =  10.0 lbs loss current weight: 180.0 lbs (Battle On!!!)
Day 09 = (0.8) =  10.8 lbs loss current weight: 179.2 lbs (Yo!)
Day 10 = (0.8) =  11.6 lbs loss current weight: 178.4 lbs (OK?)
Day 11 = (1.0) =  12.6 lbs loss current weight: 177.4 lbs (OK part 2)
Day 12 = (1.2) =  13.8 lbs loss current weight: 176.2 lbs (OK part 3)
Day 13 = (0.8) =  14.6 lbs loss current weight: 175.4 lbs (Jeez)
Day 14 =(+4.0) = 10.6 lbs loss current weight: 179.4 lbs (Just Shoot Me)
Day 15 =(+0.4) = 10.2 lbs loss current weight: 179.8 lbs (Hold the Line!!!)
Day 16 =  (1.0) = 11.2 lbs loss current weight: 178.8 lbs (Fighting Back)
Day 17 = (1.4) =  12.6 lbs loss current weight: 177.4 lbs (brig it on!)
Day 18 = (1.2) =  13.8 lbs loss current weight: 176.2 lbs (this is how we do it)
Day 19 = (1.0) = 14.8 lbs loss current weight: 175.2 lbs (talk to me)
Day 20 = (0.8) = 15.6 lbs loss current weight: 174.4 lbs (Oh my, my)
Day 21 = (1.0) = 16.6 lbs loss current weight: 173.4 lbs (all time LOW!)

Right! So I hit an all time low period. I surpassed my Zero Carb all time low of 174 lbs. I have stumbled and fell many times, because of my outright fault. I love to do side experiments to push myself into other domains. I paid the price a few times, but gained knowledge. Lucky for me that I dont "give up" or "give in" easily.

I will bloody well crawl my way back. I will fight tooth and nail to get  to the top of my game, that you can always count on. I am by no means perfect that is so true. One thing is for sure I refuse to go down for the count. I will spring up back on my feet time after time. There is no going back to 280 lbs, no not ever. I do these things for ME. It is easy to say "Just follow directions and all be fine" Sorry not in my case. I am not made like that. Never have been and never will. It is just my nature and that is something I can not change in that regard. It must be the "Anti-Sheeple" in me. Bullheaded I do agree.
